Speech #1

 My Commercial: https://youtu.be/3K_4LfzKPko

This commercial highlights the story of Serena Williams and her successful career in tennis. The commercial highlights that not only can people of the African-American race be successful in a sport like tennis, but also a woman who is strong and willful.
This commercial is convenient for sports lovers of all kinds, especially tennis fans. It could be specifically targeted towards the younger audience like young black girls who look up to black female athletes like Serena. The story that this commercial is telling the audience is about a young girl who is passionate about her sport (tennis). It highlights the ups and downs she experiences throughout her journey to success. In the end, it is teaching the audience that they need to “win from within” .Serena wins from within several times throughout the video conveniently with a green Gatorade bottle in her hand. The message to the audience is that what foods and fluids you put into your body, can determine your success. Thus suggesting that Gatorade has helped contribute to Serena’s success.
This commercial is targeting two different demographic groups in its video . To start, it is featuring a young African-American girl from Compton, a lower social class. Although this video is enforcing the norm that African-Americans come from lower income neighborhoods, it sends a different message by highlighting the huge success accomplished by Serena despite her social class. No matter what race you are or what your socioeconomic background is you can still become successful. Also, the commercial targets the demographic group of women, especially young girls. Many times throughout the commercial it mentions Serena to be strong. She argues with referees, shows frustration by banging her racket on the ground, and shows off her large calves and muscles. All of which are against social norms about women. In the end as a young girl when asked who she wants to be like when she grows up, she responds with “I want people to want to be like me.” Because of this, this commercial helps the audience get out of the cave. It furthers us from the stereotypes that black women are soft, nonathletic and inferior to everyone else. It makes the audience believe, especially young girls, that they can be whoever they want, and that they do not need to have a hero to do so.
